Design thinking has emerged as a powerful new problem-solving approach. It's used in public, private, and nonprofit sectors for solving tomorrow's user problems, fueling growth, and delivering a unique customer experience. It does not have an established algorithm or an absolute answer unlike math and science problems. It needs closely aligned social science thinking. Design thinking can be a great complement to other disciplinary ways of approaching problems, bringing a diversity of perspectives to bear to solve complex problems.
Introduction to design engineering along with prototype and testing will be presented by leading experts in the field.
Dr. V. Umasankar has passed out from Madras Institute of Technology in Automobile Engineering in 1977. Completed M.S by research from IIM and submitted thesis on Coated tools performance evaluation. Have 30 years of industrial experience in Larsen and Toubro, Rane group and Sundram Fasteners Ltd in the areas of Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Systems and General Management. Resigned after 30 years of experience in the areas of Heavy machinery manufacturing, Fabrication, CNC machining, Assembly, casting and bearing manufacturing. Trainer in ISO 9001, TS 16949, ISO 14001, OSHAS 18001 and Core tools like APQP, FMEA, MSA, PPAP, Supply chain management and SPC.
He is currently working as Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at VIT, Chennai and Heading the Materials and Manufacturing Research Group. He has 12 years of academic experience out of which 9 years at VIT Vellore and Chennai.
He has been the head of Procurement and handles supplier selection, monitoring and ensuring the effectiveness of supply chain in indigenising the components of Injection moulding machine. He has headed as Quality chief supplier rating and development. He worked as General Manager, Operations at Sundram Fasteners Ltd taking care of complete unit which was exporting the products to Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Sweden. PhD was awarded by VIT, Vellore for the thesis on Aluminium matrix composites by Powder metallurgy.
Received four funded projects from ARDB, DST, ISRO and BRNS as PI/Co- PI totalling about 197 lakhs. Guided one PhD and one M.Tech by Research. Currently guiding 4 scholars for PhD. Published more than 25 papers in scopus indexed research journals. Guided ten PG and 10 UG final year projects.
Areas of interest: Advanced manufacturing like Metal Injection moulding, Abrasive finishing, Quality management, Composite development, Surface Engineering.
Organized International Conference on Magnesium and Expo along with Indian Institute of Metals, Chennai chapter in 2016 first time in India, Chaired by International Magnesium Association President.
Currently organizing an International Conference on Metal forming in December at VIT, Chennai and a National Conference on Surface science and technology in November at VIT, Chennai as Co- Convener. Offering Value added Programmes in Industry 4.0 and Six Sigma.
Conducted many training at Corporate sector on Quality Systems, SPC, Core tools of Automotive Industry, Heat treatment, Powder Metallurgy , Operational Efficiency, World Class Manufacturing, Design Thinking and Ideation etc.
He is a certified Six Sigma Black belt from CII and conducted various workshops with Industry and Academia participation on Digital Transformation, Innovation, Cloud Based Design and Manufacturing, Environment Management etc.
